YMC America Analytical HPLC Applications for Cannabinoids

Allentown, PA -- (SBWIRE) -- 02/11/2019 -- As laws regarding the medicinal and recreational use of marijuana (Cannabis sativa) change rapidly, the need to analyze various cannabinoids produced by the plant has grown exponentially.

The main cannabinoids typically analyzed by HPLC include tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), cannabidiol (CBD), cannabinol (CBN), Cannabigerol (CBG), cannabidiolic acid (CBDA), and tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCA).

For analysts interested in cannabinoid separations, YMC has developed two isocratic HPLC methods for cannabinoid potency using their Triart C18 hybrid-silica stationary phase, as well as their Meteoric Core C18 (core-shell) material.

YMC Triart C18 is an ODS stationary phase based on a porous hybrid-silica particle. Triart is mechanically, thermally, and chemically durable, so columns packed with Triart materials offer application versatility and long column lifetime. Triart C18 is also fully scalable for microLC, UHPLC, conventional HPLC, and prep.

YMC Meteoric Core C18 is an ODS stationary phase based on a superficially porous core-shell particle (porous layer surrounding a non-porous core). Meteoric Core columns can be used at higher flow rates on conventional HPLC equipment to produce faster separations, saving analysis time and solvent. Such conditions are particularly useful for LC/MS.

In order to better understand the potency of the different strains of the cannabis plant, the methods and materials used for its analysis must be robust and reproducible. HPLC of cannabis samples can be used for determining plant strain, sample purity and potency, and dosage form quality control.
